I hate change. What about you?
Change makes me uncomfortable, change makes me nervous. I may not like everything about my life, but I’m kind of used to the way things are. And the older I get, the more this perspective takes root.
But, there’s kind of two problems with this way of thinking.
First, change happens anyway. We really don’t get much of a say in the matter. We do get a say in how we respond, though.
Second, without change, there is no progress, no growth.
So, if we shift focus from the chaos of our lives to what lies beyond, maybe change isn’t such a bad thing. Maybe we should even seek it out.
Change, whether pressed upon us from outside or springing up from within, is an opportunity for a second chance, an opportunity to create a better world and a better me, an opportunity for joy.
Happy New Year!
So, Happy New Year! Time is moving on. It’s 2025. We’ve never been here before. What are we going to do with the opportunity?
In my better moments, I find joy in January because it represents a fresh start. I’m not really talking about New Year’s resolutions, not that I have anything against them. I’m talking about digging deep.
I’m talking about pausing to reflect on our world, our relationships, our life, who we are inside. How could these things be better, how could I influence them to be better? How could I be a better son, friend, husband, father? How could my life be fuller? How could I be a better person? And then praying, seeking grace—and maybe forgiveness too—to make some positive changes, maybe big changes, maybe just simple things. Maybe I need God to make the changes in me. Then acting in faith, one step at a time.
I can’t tell you how much joy there is in seeing these kind of changes unfold over time, even if they are just very small things, things no one else can see.
Into The Blue
For me, this is the biggest January of my adult life, the biggest change. On December 31st, I closed out a lifelong career. My wife and I are packing up everything we own and moving across the country. We are heading out into the wild blue yonder, believe me! I have no real idea what my life will look like next January.
But I am so excited to find out. I am so excited to grow, to learn, to explore, to be better. I am so excited to see what God is going to create out of this chaos.
Cheers To Change!
What about you? This is a new year, a fresh start for you too. What kind of world do you want to live in? Who do you want to be? Who knows – maybe, just maybe, anything really is possible with God.

A Short Meditation
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
Every moment is pregnant with the possibility that the Spirit may move over our chaos and create something very good. Are you open to such a miracle? Let there be light.

Nous partons Into The Blue!

Κι’ εσύ; Αυτή η νέα χρονιά είναι μια νέα αρχή και για σένα. Πως θέλεις να αλλάξει τον κόσμο σου; Πωςθέλεις να μεταμορφωθείς;
I think we’re all creatures of habit. Habits are important. But I think it is important to try things that make you anxious…push your limits. Believe me, when I did the Rim to River 100 miler in Nov 2023, I was quite anxious at that starting line. But once you get started you get into a rhythm.
Troy, others here don't know this, so let me call out that you are my brother. I want to call it out because I am so proud of you. You are a model of embracing joy and living life to the fullest! I love you!
Thanks so much for subscribing and for engaging! That is my hope - that the posts will just be conversation starters among friends (and family!). I want to share but even more, I want to learn. I love your comment! I think habits and rituals are so important to give our lives rhythm, and to internalize and sustain healthy changes. And, like you say, we also need to take risks to push out into the blue!
If you have time, I'd love for you to share what you did to get to that 100 mile starting line and how the race changed you, so we can all learn what it takes to get to such a monumental, adventurous place and how the experience of pushing out like that enriches our lives.
